Certainly, there is the impression that it is merely a matter of time before some study somewhere proves conclusively that there is a link. As a consequence, companies are left with an unenviable task: proving a negative. "It is very difficult, if not impossible, to prove that anything has no risk attached to it," says Mr Nicholas.
According to the World Health Organisation, some €154m ($200m) - in an industry where annual global revenues run into hundreds of billions of dollars - has been spent on researching the potential health hazards. Companies, far from being complacent about the public's love affair with mobiles, are determined not to suffer the same fate as other industries that have ignored or mismanaged similar challenges.
