The BBC was on Thursday accused of ignorance, stereotyping and unintentional bias in a damning report on the broadcaster's coverage of Europe.
An independent panel commissioned by the corporation's governors found no evidence of systematic bias. But announcing its findings as the UK prepares for a referendum on Europe's constitutional treaty, the panel criticised the quality of European news from the world's biggest public service broadcaster.
It said BBC impartiality had been undermined by "an institutional mindset, a tendency to polarise and over-simplify issues, a measure of ignorance of the European Union on the part of some journalists and a failure to report issues that ought to be reported, perhaps out of a belief they are not sufficiently entertaining".
